Uterine colposcopy

If the pap smear test result is not normal, colposcopy may be recommended. Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic method to examine a clear view and scale of the cervix and the tissues of the vagina and female genital organs. Many weak lesions and dangerous lesions in these areas have recognizable features that can be diagnosed through examination. This work is done by using a colposcope, which provides a large and complete view of the internal areas of the female genital organs and allows the colposcopist to closely observe the normality or abnormality of the tissue, the results of tissue removal and laboratory biopsies for pathological examination. The main goal of colposcopy is to prevent cervical cancer by detecting early precancerous lesions and treating them.

What are the reasons for colposcopy?

Its causes may be the observation of abnormality in Pap smear test or pelvic examination. Colposcopy may be used to diagnose the following:

  • Genital warts (HPV virus)
  • Information about the cervix
  • Precancerous changes of cervical tissues
  • Precancerous changes in vaginal tissue
  • Precancerous changes around the vaginal opening

Colposcopy test time

This test is best done when women are not menstruating.

How is colposcopy performed?

You must remove your clothes from the waist down for colposcopy. You will be given a cover to cover your feet. You lie on your back on the examination table with your legs apart, knees bent, and heels on stirrups. The doctor inserts an instrument called a speculum, which is impregnated with lysing substances, into the vagina. In this way, the walls of the vagina are opened for colposcopy. In some cases, the cervix and vagina can be washed with vinegar solution or iodine dye so that abnormal areas can be seen better. Next, the doctor examines the cervix and vagina through a colposcope. Sometimes, the doctor may use a colposcope to take pictures for medical history. If necessary, the doctor takes samples from the suspicious areas (biopsy). The doctor may use local anesthesia to perform the biopsy. For this reason, it is possible to cause some mild cramping. Some doctors encourage their patients to use a mild pain reliever such as ibuprofen before performing colposcopy with biopsy, as it is possible that colposcopy may be a little painful. Through examining under the microscope, the pathologist will inform the gynecologist if he discovers precancerous or cancerous lesions.

Important points before colposcopy

At least 24 hours before the colposcopy, you should not do the following:

  • Take a shower
  • Use vaginal drugs
  • sex
  • Use tampons

What are the complications of colposcopy?

The risks of colposcopy and biopsy are minimal, but rare complications include:

  • Heavy bleeding that lasts more than two weeks
  • Fever or chills
  • Infection, such as heavy, yellow, or foul-smelling discharge from the vagina
  • hip pain

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. Colposcopy and biopsy do not cause any problem to get pregnant.

How much does colposcopy cost?

The cost of colposcopy depends on whether you need biopsy and sampling or not. The cost of colposcopy varies based on various variables. We suggest that you contact your doctor’s office to receive the exact cost of colposcopy. But the good news is that since this procedure is an advanced diagnostic and examination procedure, insurances cover part of the cost of colposcopy. Since colposcopy is a diagnostic method and the doctor uses it to diagnose cervical cancer, most supplementary insurances cover its cost and patients should not worry about it.
