What is a retroflex uterus?

In the normal state, the uterus is located on the bladder and is placed horizontally in the pelvis. When the uterus is inverted, its position changes from horizontal to vertical. Meanwhile, it can be said that the uterus has moved towards the spine and rectum. Retroflex uterus should not have any complications for the person and there is no need to worry. In fact, this change in the state of the uterus is common among women, so that one out of every five people has an inversion of the uterus. The uterus is located in the lower part of the pelvis and has a shape similar to a pear. In fact, the uterus is the place where the fetus is formed and grows. Therefore, retroflex uterus in pregnant women may have worried them. For this reason, it should be noted that an upside down uterus has no effect on the child’s health.

Diagnosis of retroflex uterus in pregnancy

  • As we said, the inversion of the uterus in women is a natural phenomenon that many women may experience. In fact, you can recognize this condition only during pregnancy. Of course, a specialist doctor can diagnose it at any time, but because you don’t have any symptoms, you won’t have a reason to go to the doctor. Therefore, the retroflex uterus may cause these symptoms in the first trimester of pregnancy for a person who has an inverted uterus.
  • Difficulty in urinating: according to doctors, people who have retroflex uterus can find it a little harder to empty the bladder. In fact, the cause of this phenomenon is the pressure that the uterus puts on the bladder and prevents it from functioning.
  • Back pain: it is considered as another symptom of a retroverted uterus, but remember, you may also experience back pain during pregnancy.
  • Harder access to the child: in this case, doctors may use transvaginal ultrasound to measure the baby’s heart rate instead of normal ultrasound because the fetus is a little further away from the doctor’s reach.

Factors of retroflex uterus

The reason for the inversion of the uterus in some cases is due to scar tissue or its adhesion. Uterine adhesions can be caused by:

  • PID or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: it is based on bacteria that often enters the female reproductive system through sexual intercourse. In addition, in some rare cases, when the intrauterine device is inserted, this bacterium enters the female reproductive system, which eventually leads to inflammation of the pelvis and inverted uterus.
  • Endometriosis: based on the menstrual cycle, the inner tissue of the uterus grows and thickens. If the ovaries are not fertilized, this tissue is shed, which is called menstruation or the monthly period of women. Now, if for any reason this internal tissue, which is called endometrium, begins outside the uterus, it can lead to a retroflex uterus. This condition, i.e. the growth of the endometrium outside the uterine tissue, is called endometriosis. Endometriosis is usually associated with severe pain, and because it occurs in the pelvic cavity and bladder or even ovaries, it is associated with severe pain during menstruation.
  • History of pelvic surgery: if you have previously had surgery on your pelvis, (this surgery could be due to the removal of endometriosis), or even if you have had surgery on your abdomen, there is a possibility that in the areas where the surgery was performed, it is formed, a sticky tissue is formed and eventually leads to an inverted uterus.
  • Fibroids: they are small, non-cancerous lumps that form on the surface of the uterus and lead to inversion of the uterus.
  • Pregnancy: it alone can lead to backward bending of the uterus. In fact, the uterus is fixed in the pelvis with connective tissues. During pregnancy, the ligaments or connective tissues are stretched more and finally the uterus is allowed to move backwards.

In addition to the hair follicles that we mentioned, in some exceptional cases, instead of the uterus moving forward during puberty, it moves upside down.

Can retroflex uterus lead to miscarriage?

This question is one of the most frequently asked questions among women with wrong answers. From a medical point of view, an inverted uterus or retroverse uterus does not normally have any effect on the child’s health. But one of the complications of this phenomenon is the confinement of the uterus in the pelvis, in which case, if you do not go to the doctor immediately, there will be a possibility of miscarriage.

What is an incarcerated uterus?

In some rare cases, the uterus gets stuck between the pelvic bones and prevents the growth of the uterus and fetus. This condition can be very dangerous because in addition to causing a miscarriage, it will cause complications such as blood clots, bladder dysfunction, or kidney dysfunction for the mother. The impact of the confinement of the uterus in the pelvis is determined in the second trimester of pregnancy. During this period, the fetus may be aborted but if the fetus was still growing in the third trimester, complications such as uterine rupture and premature birth may follow.

The attending physician will understand this incident, in this case, if this matter is taken care of immediately, the fetus will survive and its abortion will be prevented. This disease is not common and few pregnant women suffer from this problem. In fact, based on the numbers, it can be said that only one person out of 3000 pregnant women suffers from this condition. Nonetheless, it should be taken seriously.
